Comment Period Extended for Freeze Mini Storage and Car Wash Project

8/18/19

A revised IS/MND for the Freeze Mini Storage and Car Wash Project is being recirculated for public review  This project was first proposed in 2017, and the original IS/MND released at that time has been substantially revised.   Previous comments will not be included and must be resubmitted.

This eyesore of a project will be located to the east of North Mt. Shasta Blvd just before it merges with the freeway, at the North entrance to Mount Shasta and across from the City Park and the Big Springs. You can read WATER's comments on the Project HERE.

The IS/MND (Page 3.0-27) describes “infiltration trenches” and “vegetated swales” to impound and pretreat excessive storm water flows from the paved portions of the project.  Given the location close by of Big Springs, the Headwaters of the Sacramento River, where innumerable visitors come to collect and drink the spring water, and the Deetz 125 soil notorious for its rapid percolation properties underlying the project site; the mitigations for polluted storm water runoff are inadequate and would cause pollution of the aquifer below.  California does have laws prohibiting the degradation of water, and pollution of the groundwater by this project would run afoul of these.  A car wash at this location is not very foresighted.

• We urge all citizens to write the Planning Commission with their concerns about the inadequacy of the IS/MND.  All the documents for this project can be reviewed at https://mtshastaca.gov/planning/.

• Written comments on the Revised IS/MND may be submitted by mail, email, or in person to the City of Mt. Shasta, 305 N. Mt. Shasta Boulevard by email to jlucchesi@mtshastaca.gov. The City must receive comments no later than 5:00 PM on August 28, 2019.

A Public Hearing will be held during the September 17, 2019 Planning Commission meeting at (6:00 pm at the City Park Upper Lodge.
